A Day's Work - A Home In The Rain
Tibor, the master brain behind Metalrage, gave me this record and told me that this was something I’d definitely like. A Day’s Work comes from Alkmaar, The Netherlands. After releasing their debut Above And Within’, followed by their EP Drowning In What I Believe they released A Home In The Rain.
Their discography tells you that drummer Jochem and bassplayer Michiel recorded an album together with Keith Caputo. After this they did a tour throughout Europe. Just a few weeks ago I did visit a Keith Caputo concert together with my girlfriend. And believe me, that was just one of the best shows I had ever seen! As both play in A Day’s Work it means that they do have skills and sure know how to rock.
Maybe rock is not the right definition. Their music is way more pop then rock if you’d ask me. It’s very sweet but also energetic. No wonder that they get compared with bands like Filter, Marillion and the early U2. They use a lot of extra sounds/effects that almost gives it a bit new wave swing. You can hear that best on the fourth song ‘Welcome Home’.
I must say vocalist Paul got a great voice. Very diverse and steady. Totally awesome that Arjen van Wijk (This Beautiful Mess) joined the group as guest musician on the song ‘My Sad Day Ends’.
A lot of familiar names flew by when I took a look at the booklet. A Home In The Rain was mixed by Martijn Groeneveld at the Mailman Studios Utrecht. I once had the honour to experience the recording process of Face Tomorrow´s latest album The Closer You Get in that same studio. I must say that they all did a pretty good job on A Home In The Rain. Great production. It sounds really good.
Well, I must say Tibor was right about A Day´s Work. I like it but it’s not something that totally fits my musical taste. It hangs a bit in between soft rock and new wave pop. I like it when it’s more rock and less U2. But in the end, if you like it or not, you cannot deny that A Day’s Work makes quality music!
